Adventures in Adulthood

Hi everyone. After a long absence (and ongoing affair with Tumblr), I’m back. I turned 18 recently, and that, plus the start of a new year, has compelled me to pursue my freelance writing career in earnest. Now Phantasma will be narrower in focus than it used to be. I’ve moved all my content and ramblings about gaming, music, and the like to my tumblog, Eidolon. Phantasma is now the chronicle of my budding writing career. In the future, I will post links to articles I post online.

I recently signed up for a user-generated content site called Hubpages, which is apparently quite popular and treats its writers well. (I have an account on Yahoo! Voices [formerly Associated Content], but that site has gone downhill since the Yahoo acquisition.) I’m excited! My plan is to publish at least 1 article a week, which I think is doable, barring a crap-ton of schoolwork. My ultimate plan is to write for Game Informer.* But that is a long time coming–until then, Hubpages it is.

What hit me a few days ago for the first time is that I’m an adult now. I have to get out in the world, make myself known, make money, and learn how to wash dishes. It’s scary. But there’s no way around it. I knew adolescence would have to end sometime, so there’s no use whining about it. I’m going to apply for a part-time position at Gamestop to make some money for driving lessons, and I’ll see where that takes me.

I’ve read some less-than-glowing accounts about working for Gamestop, but I figure if I really don’t like it, I’ll quit. Even though I don’t see how I could hate it. Yeah, employees have to keep to strict quotas, but I expected as much out of a retail chain. The customers are occasionally aggravating, but isn’t it like that everywhere? Plus, I can work around video games ALL DAY. Not that I’ll be playing them during work or anything, but still. And I’ll get to meet fellow gamers! That’s always a good thing.

*Also part of my ultimate plan: to live in a lonely little cabin by the sea on the west coast, a bus trip away from the Seattle Public Library. My horror novels will make me wealthy and Tom Hollander will personally beg me to star in the movie adaptations.

  1. What can I not say? Grandiose, tongue-in-cheek humorous, outrageous, salty, sassy, impudent! I love the goal-setting ramblings. On the edge of my seat waiting for more!
